This May, we spent a week in a condo at the Massanutten Resort, in McGaheysville, VA.
The area is breathtaking, and the resort had many great summer-time activities. The girls and I purchased Adventure passes, and Justin got the Discovery pass.
Justin golfed almost every day, and the girls and I made it through a 13-hole round. We did a day at their water park, rode the sky coaster, and took a trip up the sky lift. From there, we walked a short (but steep) 10-minutes to the 2,920-foot elevation to see a view that stretched all the way to the Allegheny Mountains.
We also tie-dyed t-shirts, played tennis, made a couple of pained crafts, and Justin and I took a wine tasting class. There was so much to do at the resort. The mountain biking trail down the ski slopes looked terrifying to me, but it was very busy!
We thought that we’d go to the water park on a weekday and avoid the crowds, since most kids were still in school. We showed up on a Tuesday morning in our bathing suits to find out it was closed until Friday. We were leaving on Friday, so we made going back our top priority. Of course, a local school district their field trip and 6 busloads of kids were there too. So much for trying to beat the crowds! The exterior part of the waterpark opened the next day, so four hours was plenty of time.
TIP: Take towels to the water park. They are not provided.
We were in a condo, so we made most of our meals there. We did eat at Virginia’s BBQ and had some apps at the Base Camp. Both were very good. We also ate at Hanks off the property. The pulled pork was delicious (as was everything), and we bought a bottle of their barbecue sauce.
We spent the rest of the trip away from the resort. We went to Luray Caverns, Monticello, SkyLine Drive and Lavender Farms and a 500,000 square foot book fair. You can read about these day trips here.
We’re not big skiers, but I do think a winter trip to Massanutten would be beautiful. Where are your favorite places in the Shenandoah Valley?
